Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists celebrates 10th Anniversary with exclusive veterinary event

Jul 14, 2025 | News

World-leading Specialists to share insights and case studies in the fields of anaesthesia, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics, internal medicine and soft tissue surgery.

We are holding an exclusive free event for small animal first opinion vets and nurses on Friday 12th September to celebrate our 10th anniversary. The event will be held at the University of Surrey, and guests will be given a wide-ranging series of talks by the hospital’s multi-disciplinary team.

With the capacity to host 150 vets and veterinary nurses from around the region, the event will showcase sessions from world-leading anaesthetists, neurologists, internal medicine specialists and orthopaedic and soft tissue surgeons.

Internal Medicine and Feline Medicine Specialist Sam Taylor and Specialist Anaesthetist Jo Michou will start the day, giving a ‘Feline pain management in 2025: acute, chronic and challenging cases’ session, which will cover the approach to pain management in cats – including updates on medications and what behavioural changes to look out for that indicate pain.

Specialist Neurologists Colin Driver and Jeremy Rose will then take to the floor with a ‘Beating back pain better – a collaborative approach’, which will offer delegates a deeper understanding of the emerging medical and surgical therapies for the management of companion animal spinal pain.

After lunch, Soft Tissue Surgery Specialist Matteo Cantatore will run a lecture on ‘Gallbladder Mucocoele: are we taking action too early or too late?’, where he will discuss the aetiopathogenesis of gallbladder mucocoele and relevant common co-morbidities, along with comparing medical versus surgical management.

A final talk will be given by Orthopaedic Specialist Nuria Comas on ‘Thoracic limb lameness – evaluation and treatment: surgical vs conservative’, which will include an orthopaedic exam, which diagnostic tests to perform and when, differential diagnosis, plus a section on elbow dysplasia – when to treat surgically and when to treat conservatively.

To start the day, attendees will also learn about how Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists has evolved. Back in 2015, a small team of 20 clinicians – working in anaesthesia, cardiology, internal medicine, neurology and surgery – moved into a newly built practice. Now we are one of the largest and most advanced veterinary Specialist referral centres in the UK, with a 140-strong team. The hospital offers the broadest range of Specialist veterinary referral services including anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, ophthalmology, oncology, orthopaedics, physiotherapy, soft tissue surgery and has its own Critical and Emergency Care Centre.

“We can’t wait to host this event for our referring vets, nurses and paraprofessionals. We hope this exclusive open day will give a huge insight into the skills and abilities of our amazing multidisciplinary team – and how far we have come in just one decade, along with the amazing treatments that we can achieve today, and where our disciplines are headed in the future. We do hope that our visitors enjoy the day.”

Karla Borland, Clinical Director of Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists and Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia

The event will run between 9.30am to 4pm on Friday 12th September in the Lecture theatre 2 within the University of Surrey Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. Lunch and coffee breaks will be provided.
