Internal Medicine
Our internal medicine team will diagnose and treat many conditions that affect a single organ, organ system/s, or the entire body.
Overview
Internal medicine often requires close working with the wider team, including neurology, surgery, oncology, and radiology. Endocrine conditions (diseases of glands that produce hormones), gastrointestinal conditions (diseases involving the gut and organs such as the pancreas), disease of the liver and gallbladder, conditions affecting the urinary system (including the kidney, bladder and urethra), nasal and respiratory conditions, and many others can be investigated by blood tests, but often more detailed information is required, obtained through other tests such as ultrasound, x-rays, CT scans, endoscopy, needle aspirates and biopsies.
Our internal medicine team sees referrals for many signs and conditions, including:
- Oesophageal/gastrointestinal conditions (e.g., oesophageal strictures, acute or chronic vomiting and/or diarrhoea)
- Respiratory conditions (e.g. coughing, nasal disease)
- Urinary tract conditions (e.g. renal failure, haematuria, polyuria/polydipsia, incontinence)
- Haematological conditions (e.g. anaemia, thrombocytopenia, coagulopathies)
- Immune-mediated conditions (e.g. polyarthritis)
- Endocrine conditions (e.g. diabetes mellitus, hyperadrenocorticism)
- Hepatopathies, pancreatic conditions
- Cancer
- Cases with systemic illness (pyrexia, anorexia, weight loss)
- Gastrointestinal or respiratory foreign bodies requiring endoscopic removal
- Infectious disease.
