What does the Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists Pain Clinic provide?

The pain clinic at Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists provides support to caregivers and their pets with ongoing management of chronic and complex pain conditions. Our Specialists in Anaesthesia and Analgesia collaborate closely with other Lumbry Park specialists, including those in physiotherapy, neurology, orthopaedics, oncology and diagnostic imaging. Together, we provide comprehensive pain management support, optimising outcomes for chronic conditions.

What cases could be suitable for a pain clinic consultation?

• Patients with chronic pain that is not well controlled, or unmanaged acute pain
• Patients with complex medical histories, where certain medications may be contraindicated or not tolerated.
• Caregivers who need time and support to help them understand their pet’s pain profile and management strategies

What to expect from a Pain Clinic Consultation?

The initial extended consultation with one of our experienced Specialists in Anaesthesia and Analgesia typically lasts approximately 90 minutes.
The in-depth initial assessment includes gathering information and discussion of:

• Medical history
• Any current diagnoses
• Lifestyle history including home life, and activity and exercise pattern
• Past treatments and medications including any adverse or positive effects
• Caregiver concerns and expectations
• Physical examination

The aim will be to develop a personalised pain management programme for you and your pet with informed choice and continued support to both the caregiver and primary care vet. This may include;

• Medication planning, including using those licensed for use in humans where no veterinary equivalent exists
• Lifestyle and environmental strategies
• Options of other therapies where appropriate including hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, acupuncture

What happens after the appointment?

The details of the consultation are summarised in a letter to your primary care vet and yourself.
Continued support is essential in cases such as these. Follow-up appointments will discuss response to treatments, changes to treatments and discussion of additional management where appropriate.

Our anaesthesia and pain management team are happy to discuss and provide advice to veterinary practices regarding management of specific cases.
