What does the Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists Endocrine Clinic provide?

The Endocrine Clinic at Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists provides diagnostic and therapeutic plans for patients with complex endocrine disorders. We provide ongoing support to caregivers and their pets to manage these conditions. We collaborate closely with our primary care vets to optimise outcomes for our patients.

What cases could be suitable for a Endocrine clinic consultation?

  • Dogs with hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease), hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s disease), hypothyroidism and diabetes mellitus.
  • Cats with hyperthyroidism and diabetes mellitus

What to expect from an Endocrine Clinic Consultation?

The initial extended consultation with one of our experienced Specialists in Internal Medicine typically lasts approximately 90 minutes.
The in-depth initial assessment includes gathering information and discussion of:

  • Medical history
    • Any current diagnoses
    • Lifestyle history including diet, feeding regime, exercise tolerance
    • Past treatments and medications including any adverse or positive effects
    • Caregiver concerns and expectations
    • Physical examination
  • Diagnostic tests including blood tests and urinalysis
  • We might discuss the requirement for further investigations such as advanced diagnostic imaging, sampling etc. but these will always be discussed in advance and estimates of costs will be provided for clear and transparent budget planning.
  • For diabetic patients, we often place a continuous glucose monitor (Freestyle libre) to allow monitoring of interstitial glucose and response to insulin dose adjustments.

The aim will be to develop a personalised management plan for you and your pet with informed choice and continued support to both the caregiver and primary care vet. This might include;

  • Medication planning
    • Lifestyle changes
    • Diet changes

What happens after the appointment?

The details of the consultation are summarised in a letter to your primary care vet and yourself.
Continued support is essential in cases such as these. A follow-up appointment is usually booked 2 weeks after the initial consultation to discuss and monitor response to treatments. As many of our patients travel long distances, we are also happy to guide your primary care vet with planned rechecks and management adjustments.

We are always happy to discuss and provide advice to veterinary practices regarding management of endocrine cases.
