This is lovely lady is Ruby.

Poor Ruby was unfortunately bitten by an Adder and therefore referred to our Emergency and Critical Care Specialist Adam Mugford.

Adders are usually found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, woodland edges and rocky hillsides. Adders are not aggressive and tend to only bite when they feel threatened. They hibernate all winter so snake bites tend to happen over the summer months.

If you think that your pet has been bitten:

• Do not panic.
• Do not touch the bite.
• Do not try and catch the snake.
• Do not kill the snake – Adders are protected species in the UK.
• Carry your dog to your car and drive straight to your Vet (even if your pet seems initially well).

Snake bites are very hard to prevent however if you are worried you could keep your dog on a lead if you know Adders are present in the area.

The good news is that Ruby has made a brilliant recovery after close monitoring and treatment here at the Hospital. On the left hand side this is Ruby feeling very poorly with her swollen face however as you can see on the right just before she went home the had swelling subsided.
